About Proliferation and Machinist: Zeno van den Broek (Rotterdam, 1982) creates and manipulates spatial experiences with sounds and visuals since 2005 as Machinist. Inspired by modern art, architecture and the contemporary city, he merges sounds, arts and architecture. A combination of visuals and sounds immerses the observer of his works. With his four-piece video Proliferation Machinist investigates the uncontrolled self-organization and evolution of different layers of urban cells.

The also exhibited Viens Avec Moi Dans Le Vide is Machinist his new record, that calls on the auditory senses of the listener to picture an open and wide panoramic vista of emotions with a sharp focus on the horizon. Viens Avec Moi Dans Le Vide gives way to spatiality and slowly ushers the listener out of the cacophony of everyday rumble by means of abstract sounds with melody and spoken word to open a void. Zeno van den Broek, het brein achter het Rotterdamse dronesproject Machinist, zegt beïnvloed te zijn door moderne kunst, architectuur en hedendaagse stedelijke landschappen. Bij het beluisteren van zijn alweer zesde album Viens avec Moi dans le Vide vraag je je af hoe Van den Broek zich voelt als hij op de Erasmusbrug staat en de Rotterdamse skyline in zich opneemt.

Want hoewel de Rotterdamse atmosfeer wellicht een stukje grimmiger is dan die van de gezapige, met Mac Bikes bezaaide Amsterdamse grachtengordel, lijkt Van den Broek zich de zaken wel erg somber voor te stellen. Dat is natuurlijk een greep in de lucht, want zelfs achter de meest duistere klanken kunnen guitige gezichten schuilen. Niettemin zal de kans dat Machinist zich door het jaarlijks terugkerende Caraïbisch getinte zomerfestival in de Maasstad heeft laten inspireren verwaarloosbaar zijn.

De unheimische drones op Viens avec Moi dans le Vide doen eerder denken aan apocalyptische stadslandschappen zoals die beschreven worden door pessimistische schrijvers als José Saramago en Michel Houellebecq. Toch blijkt met deze release op het toepasselijk getitelde Betontoon dat ambient zelfs in zijn meest duistere vorm voor ontspanning kan zorgen. Voor de masochist welteverstaan. Zo zijn op de derde – naamloze – track echo’s uit het Berlijn van Basic Channel terug te horen terwijl een gemene, kolossale typmachine op de achtergrond meetikt.

Met Viens avec Moi dans le Vide heeft Van den Broek een plaat gemaakt die urban is in de ongebruikelijke zin van het woord. Een aanrader voor de weinig bang aangelegde liefhebber van eenzame, industriële horror.

Substituting the mediation of dark claustrophobic confinement in massive ‚Innenraum‘-like shades of black presented on BlackBlock, VIENS AVEC MOI DANS LE VIDE gives way to spatiality. Just as one can be struck in awe vis-a-vis a monumental space and being confronted with a sense of personal insignificance and oppression; one can also experience this space as in themselves small and insignificant marks upon the grandiose canvas of space at large. Thus invoking awareness and appreciation of the space that is being created both tactile and intangible. VIENS AVEC MOI DANS LE VIDE slowly ushers the listener out of the cacophony of everyday rumble by means of abstract sounds with melody and spoken word to open a void. A mode of being which is the central point and passionate key to VIENS AVEC MOI DANS LE VIDE: the void as the ultimate condition for substance.
